The Scene
Matriarch of a clan of Seattle restauranteurs, Melina Varchetta runs this University District spot with a homemaker's attention to detail. Gracious rather than formidable, she sits up front near the piano player and next to her husband, Pasquale, greeting patrons and deferentially making the rounds to make certain everyone is happy. Everything is pretty, neat and orderly: green- and pink-rimmed dinner plates, yellow napkins arranged in wine glasses, and flower boxes outside.
The Food
Preparation rises to the same standard of thoughtful precision. Lamb shank, braised in white wine and aromatic vegetables, arrives tender and succulent, accompanied by a puree of its braising base and a sensational risotto cake. Grilled eggplant, stuffed with mozzarella and prosciutto, makes a toothsome appetizer. A thick, textured soup of roasted garlic, potato and mushroom manifests Mamma's appreciation of simple, focused flavor.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoAround the corner from the Seven Gables Theatre, Mamma Melina's draws moviegoers before and after shows.
The ExtrasEnjoy live piano music on Tuesday nights and Friday through Sunday. Requests are often honored.
ParkingFinding a spot in the U-District can be tricky, especially with two movie theaters within walking distance. Make sure to read all street signs to avoid a ticket. North of 50th Street is a good bet.

The italian food here is absoutely incredible. The sauces they create have a very distinct taste. This is a very cozy retaurant and the wait on the weekends can be very long. Many patrons simply like to sit around and sip wine after dinner. The piano is a little loud so it is hard to conversate. MAKE SURE TO GET RESERVATIONS. You will be standing in a cramped lobby if not.

I've been there twice now with my husband-once when we were just dating and then, again, the other night on our first wedding anniversary. it has been consistent. they have delicious food. they do have options for vegetarians and are just as good as the ones for the meat-eaters! wonderful wine. and such a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. you can dress up or go in jeans and it's no problem. we had ONE waitress who seemed a bit robotic. but the other staff were very friendly. and she was too, really, but needs to loosen up, perhaps? i don't know! it's not important! the important thing is that it was a lovely way to celebrate our first year of marriage! and sumone ice cream for dessert! :)
Pros: atmosphere, food, music-wonderful pianist/singer who takes requests!!!
Cons: none worth mentioning! it was lovely!!!!
